Who Were The Amazons?
The Amazons were a mythical civilization of women who were known for their prestige in battle. There are a few Amazons who are specifically mentioned and stand out from the rest, usually the tribe leader. Some are more famed, such as Hippolyta, who was used by Hera to give Hercules trouble during his labors. Aello, though not a major Amazon, was the first one who attacked Hercules, and also killed herself because of his impenetrable lion skin while attempting to kill him. Andromache was another Amazon queen, who ruled after Hippolyta died. Her name means "Man Fighter." She ruled over many Amazons, including Alcinoe, Alkaia, Andromeda, Antimache, Areximacha, Kleoptoleme, Kydiome, Lykopis, Okypous, Pisto, Pyrgomache, Scyleia, Teisipyte, Telepyleia, Thraso, Toxaris, Toxis, Toxophile. Penethesilea was the Queen who led them during the Trojan war. Her name means 'mourned by the people'. When she died during the Trojan war, Achilles killed her, but when he saw her dead face, he fell in love with her.
