What's the Difference?
Hamilton's Version
Hercules's ninth labor was to secure the girdle of Hippolyta. Hippolyta is the queen of the fierce female warriors called the Amazons. The queen received him kindly, but Hera came and convinced the Amazons that Hercules was here to steal their queen away. They immediately took up arms against him, Hercules killed their queen and took the girdle.
Bulfinch's Version
Admeta ordered Hercules to obtain the girdle of the queen of the Amazons. The Amazons were a nation of woman warriors that held many flourishing cities. They only brought up the girls and sent the boys away to a neighboring nation or killed them. Hercules along with several volunteers reached the country of the Amazons. Hippolyta agreed to give him her girdle, but Juno disguised as an Amazon persuaded the Amazons that Hercules was here to capture their queen. They armed themselves and went to Hercules's ship. Thinking the queen betrayed him, he slew her, and took the girdle.
The Amazons also took sides in the Trojan War under the queen Penthesilea. They sided with the Trojans and slew many brave warriors. The Greek hero Achilles slew Penthesilea during battle. He looked down upon the queen and fell in love with her because of her youth, beauty and courage.
